The SATRD group of the Department of Communications (DCOM) of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has been financed by the European Union through the Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the Valencian Community 2014-2020 for the purchase, installation, and configuration of a Software Defined Virtualizable Infrastructure for the Design and Validation of IoT Services. This infrastructure is made up of a data center and a high-performance access network to design and develop technological solutions based on current technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G together with the Internet of Things. In addition to the creation and start-up of the infrastructure, among the secondary objectives we find:
• Creation of a test environment with different IoT access networks, mainly low power wide area networks (LPWAN) where innovative technologies such as LoRa will be used, and mobile access networks, with 5G radio access technologies such as NB-IoT or LTE-M.
• Execution of new services based on IoT in a dynamic environment.
• Position the infrastructure as a pioneering test environment, with the possibility of opening it up to other laboratories and institutes and being able to be used in the framework of future competitive national and European projects.
Thanks to this infrastructure, the research group will have enough hardware and infrastructure power to implement its services and continue its research lines in a single controlled environment, solving the dependence on third parties to test these technological solutions and significantly speeding up the research carried out. At this time, the infrastructure is installed and the configuration process has begun, it is expected to be fully operational to test use cases as of May 2021.
